Casita travel trailer – 2015 Spirit Deluxe.
We recently put a down payment on a new 2015 Casita Travel Trailer; we are having it delivered from Rice, Texas at the end of October, 2014.
While we excitedly wait for its arrival, I thought I’d write a list of our top ten reasons we’re joining the RV world and buying a Casita travel trailer!
Although there are many more, these are our biggies.
- We’re buying a travel trailer to see and experience more of the U.S.A. Buying a Casita travel trailer is a way to broaden our shared love of travel and exploration. We are ready to take our travel hobby to the next level.
- It will extend trip lengths when traveling. Spending only one night at the beach because a hotel room per night is $359.00 is now a thing of the past for us*!
- Pets can tag along! Our beloved pets are part of our family. We don’t like leaving them behind, and now we won’t have to.
- It’s an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to be challenged. We’ll be trying new things. This is a good thing to do throughout life every now and again.
- A travel trailer will offer more freedom and flexibility. Neither Mike nor I commute into work. We are at home together most of the time during the week. Mike is an IT guy; all he requires is a phone and an internet connection to keep up with his work duties. Therefore, if things go well, we might be able to stay on the road longer with a travel trailer—an exciting future prospect for us!
- Deeper connection. Mike and I will have more bonding experiences during our travels together. Exploration is something we can share that we both love to do which in turn, helps us stay healthy in our relationship.
- New Friendships. Owning a Casita will (hopefully) introduce us to new friends and acquaintances who share our hobby. One can never have enough friends!
- The size and functionality of this trailer is ideal for a small family. The Casita travel trailer is small and lightweight enough that we can reasonably pull it with a pickup truck, it can fit into most spaces, and it is suitable as a second home for the two of us and our pets while on the road.
- Casita travel trailers are made out of fiberglass. Fiberglass is durable and leak resistant.
- Casita owners and expert RV reviewers rate the Casita travel trailer highly. There seems to be a lot of fans of the Casita travel trailer–and not a lot of complaints and regrets being shared online; this tells us something about the quality of these trailers.

Long story short: We sold our Casita in 2015, missed having the trailer, and now have an order in for a Teardrop trailer, which we should have soon. Just a FYI about what to expect! As always, questions and comments are welcome.

Hi, Mike and Kristin. I am really enjoying your blog. I have a couple of questions about your Casita Trailer. When you purchased it, did you add any available options? If yes, which did you add. Are there any options you wish you had added? What kind of gas mileage are you getting when towing the trailer. Do you use your toilet and shower? Is it hard to deal with “waste” disposal?

Hi Aunt Chris, We’re so happy that you’re enjoying the blog! Thank you! We did add options to our Casita. We added the furnace, awning, high lift axle, outdoor shower, TV package, etc. Well, really, we added almost all the available options except for the microwave and the automatic jack lift. Are you thinking of getting one too? If so, we could give you a copy of our record of sale, with all the details and prices. So far, we are getting 14 or 15 mpg on the highway. We have not used our toilet or shower yet. It’s been so cold at night that we figured we’d wait until Spring to start using the water because we were worried about freezing pipes. We added a Hensley weight distribution hitch and it’s been no problem to tow whatsoever. No sway, or or any problems on the highways. Very easy to pull. We can answer any additional questions you have. Please let us know! 🙂

PS: We are happy that we did not add the microwave because that would have taken up too much storage space. Storage space is very important in a small trailer, such as the Casita, so our solution was to use that space as a large cupboard. In place of the microwave, we purchased a much smaller toaster oven and that has been working out great. We haven’t used our furnace yet, so I’m not sure we needed that after all.

Hi Kristen, Love, love your blog. My husband and I are empty nesters and are interested in buying a Casita to use temporarily on our building site, and then to take on the open road to enjoy our kids and adventures on our own. You referenced in an earlier blog that your Casita is a custom order that was delivered. Can you provide more detail about the process? We unfortunately, have been unable to “tour” a Casita in our area since none seem to be available. From our preliminary research we would like a Liberty deluxe since we like the king size bed option, but noted that captain’s chair are not offered with this package. Any details you could provide about the buying process, delivery,options, etc would be greatly appreciated. Best Polly

In regards to the Casita buying process, I’ll try to recount what I can remember. We actually didn’t go tour the factory before buying either. it was too far away and we couldn’t take time off for that trip. So we called Jonathan, the representative for the Casita factory (perhaps the owner?) and we asked him all about the process and the fee for delivery, etc. He was nice, and did not pressure us at all about the sale. He just answered our questions.
There is a program where Casita owners in your area sign up to show you their RVs. Well, a nice man in our area had the type of Casita we were looking for, so we met him at his storage facility, and showed us around and gave us a tour (Johnathan gave us the man’s contact information for the tour). We decided at that point, that we would likely get the Casita.
The delivery fee depends on where you live, in conjunction to the factory. If I remember correctly, our delivery fee might of been $800 or so (not more than $1,000).
Once we called and expressed interest, Jonathan from the factory sent us a brochure with a bunch of information, options, and exact prices in the mail. That made a big difference to see exactly what to expect, and to proceed with building our Casita.
Once we placed our order, I think it took about 3 months or less to have it delivered. The day of the delivery, an older gentleman dropped off the Casita in front of our house, had us sign some paperwork, and then he was on his way.
It was a pretty easy process actually. We liked that there was no high pressure sales tactics, and everything was done clearly and transparently.

I agree all 10 reasons why you have decided to purchase a Casita. I have pretty much the same reasons why I plan to purchase one. I have not seen a SD yet but I have seen other two models they offer. Like you said I can’t find much complaints about the Casita online. The three Casita owners in my area love their trailers and seem they always travel with it. I live in So California and I plan to order one soon and hope to pick it up in October and return home via New Mexico and Colorado. I am little nervous about driving through Colorado Springs as I never had a trailer before. I should do more research before I pick it up. I just wanted to make a road trip for me and my wife since we did not have a vacation this year. Since we didn’t order it yet, anything you can add to trailer so there is no room for regrets? I plan to buy 17′ SD. Thank you in advance!

Hi Terry, Congratulations on deciding to get the Trailer. We love our Casita. I would suggest getting most of the upgrades, minus the microwave; that way you can use that space for food storage. However that’s just been our personal preference. It just takes a little time to get used to operating the trailer. We are finally becoming pros now. It’s a lot of fun. Good luck to you! Thanks Kristin for your prompt response. I would take your suggestion just as it is and avoid the microwave. You can always get a smaller microwave and have little left over space for other storage.
Two more questions: 1. Do you like the GPX brand TV and DVD combo in Casita trailer? Does it work well?
2. Did you get the Electric Tongue Jack? Does that help? Thanks.

Terry, Yes we like the TV/DVD combo. We didn’t get the electric jack. It’s very easy for us to use the manual jack. 🙂

Kristin, it is possible I might order the trailer tomorrow. So I am trying to get all my answers in time. Getting exited! Did you get the Friction Anti Sway Control? Has it been helping you when you drive?

Terry, We didn’t get the anti-sway control from the Casita factory. Instead, we ordered a Hensley Cub weight distribution hitch and had it installed by a local RV dealer near us. The Hensley Cub has been fabulous. We are worry warts so we went a bit overboard with that. Many people order the sway control and are glad they did.

Since you asked, I do have another question. Before that I want to say Casita is like a mini airstream or retro. I don’t have one yet but I love it already. Hope they never change the look. I joined a couple of forums and I am trying to get much info as possible since I am just about ready to order one. Since you are traveling a lot, have you taken your Casita to Colorado? If you did, how is the driving through the mountains and hilly roads?

We went to Boulder, CO in January but we didn’t take the Casita that time. Our experience has been positive pulling the Casita so far. Going up hills takes a little more time, but it’s been fairly easy and manageable towing, especially with the Hensley hitch. It’s probably one of the easier trailers to tow, as long as you have a proper tow vehicle and support tools. We just try to drive as safe as possible, don’t speed, and ensure proper weights. It’s a great trailer.

We were very nervous too. It’s honesty a lot to learn. Just take one step at a time and that should help. Also, we bought the “I love my Casita” CD. It has been a huge help to us. We printed it out and made a binder out of it. We keep it in our Casita for reference. Although it’s been quite the learning process (it still is), I believe the hobby of RVing has brought tremendous value and entertainment to our lives. Congrats again!

Well I slept all right last night. Purchasing a Casita opened a whole other world to me. For the first time I am chatting with people in 4 different forums and spending so much time doing research online. I have to stop all these as soon as my wife says “You are spending too much time on PC”. She will say this today or tomorrow. Casita will be like the wedding wows. For better or worse I hope to stay with it :).
Like you said I will learn things day by day. The most nervous part I am experiencing right now is bringing back the trailer through Colorado driving 3600-mile round trip in the middle of October. That will be a very adventurous trip. Once it is in my yard, I hope to enjoy it to the fullest whenever I feel like it.

Hi Terry, We’re currently staying at Lake Merwin Camper’s Hideaway near Amboy, WA during the week and then driving down (with our Casita in tow) to Bend, Oregon on the weekends. We’re looking at buying a house in Central Oregon soon.

I remember how exited you were last year after purchasing Casita. I just logged in and found out your Casita was sold. What a shock! But I understand life so I know you had your reasons. Anyway congratulations on your new house in Oregon. Wish you both all the best and someday when you both are retired, I won’t be surprised if you get another Casita.
I am enjoying mine and waiting for the whether to get little warmer so I and my wife can go camping. We picked our Casita last October in Rice TX and spent 9 days camping while coming home.
We love our Casita!

We love it! It has been a busy year with other travels. But we managed to camp in Nevada and visited 3 national parks, 5 days in Big Sur and some beach camping (dry camping) this year. Hope to do more beach camping. Yes it is small, but I organized Casita just the way we want it. Happy to send you some pictures if you are interested seeing them. Hope you are enjoying living in OR.
