This last weekend we decided to spend each day driving around town and taking turns backing up the Casita, hitching, and unhitching the trailer. Everything was easy—except for the backing up part!

We asked our friend Bud, who has towed trailers and boats for the past 30 years, to join us on the first day at a nearby park to practice backing up. He provided us some good tips and extra confidence, but we both realized quickly that backing up was not going to be trouble-free.

You know the advice people give to put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel, and then slightly turn it each way you want the trailer to go? Well, that’s the tactic we took but it only worked a tiny bit. The other times, the Casita seemed to have a mind of its own! Continue reading

My favorite picture of the North Carolina Coast is of this grand pier, jetting out into the ocean. I took this picture a few years ago. If I remember correctly, it was taken in Atlantic City, NC, a few weeks after a hurricane hit the coastline. If you look closely, you can see that the pier is damaged in some spots.

Two of the most beautiful areas of North Carolina, in my opinion, are the coastline and the western North Carolina mountains. If you get the chance to visit, my suggestion is to check out Carolina Beach and Asheville. Continue reading

About a month ago, we traded in our Scion car and bought a Honda Ridgeline truck so that we could tow our new Casita travel trailer. We’re also using the truck as our only shared daily transportation vehicle around town. We think we made a good choice for our needs and we’re really enjoying our truck thus far. Seeing Lake Tahoe for the first time is an incredible experiencehigh up in the mountains, it appears massive. The lake water is an attractive clear blue color and the air smells of fresh pine. There are striking, soaring trees everywhere and large boulders compliment the lake’s edge. Really, Lake Tahoe reminds us of paradise. If you are planning a visit, you are in for a treat.
